Elevator guide for Mexico: types, prices, codes and maintenance
Clear answers from Karu Elevators® specialists to the most common questions before buying, modernizing or maintaining an elevator.
What types of elevators are used in commercial buildings?
Commercial buildings mainly use traction passenger elevators, freight elevators, panoramic elevators and, in hospitals, stretcher or bed elevators. The choice depends on passenger traffic, building height and what is being moved.
- Traction passenger: hotels, offices and towers; 630 to 2,000 kg and 30+ stops.
- Freight elevators: warehouses, stores and restaurants.
- Panoramic: shopping centers, hotels and facades.
- Stretcher and bed: hospitals and clinics.
- Escalators and moving walkways: high flows over a few floors.
Hydraulic vs electric elevators: pros and cons
Hydraulic elevators suit low-rise buildings (2 to 5 floors) thanks to their smooth ride and lower installation cost; electric traction elevators are better for taller buildings because they are faster and use less energy.
- Hydraulic: very reliable and quiet; slower and requires oil.
- Electric traction: higher speed and travel; more efficient with a variable frequency drive.
- Machine-room-less: saves space in both cases and makes retrofits easier.
How much does an elevator cost in Mexico?
There is no single price: an elevator’s cost depends on the number of stops, capacity, speed, unit type, finishes and construction work. A residential elevator usually costs less than a commercial passenger or freight elevator.
For small offices or homes, the most useful step is a quote with a technical visit: Karu Elevators® does it free of charge and presents options for your budget.
What are typical elevator dimensions?
As a reference, a residential elevator fits in a shaft of around 1.2 × 1.2 m, an 8-person (630 kg) passenger elevator needs a shaft close to 1.6 × 1.7 m, and a stretcher elevator needs a deep cabin. Final dimensions depend on capacity and doors.
What are the legal requirements to install an elevator in Mexico?
In Mexico, electric passenger and freight elevators are governed by NOM-053-SCFI-2000 (safety specifications for new equipment), together with each municipality’s building code and the building’s Civil Protection requirements.
- Building permit and plans that include the elevator shaft
- Safety devices: safety gear, overspeed governor, alarm and rescue
- Commissioning tests before use
- Regular maintenance with a service log, often required by Civil Protection
How often should an elevator be serviced, and what does an annual contract cost?
Monthly preventive maintenance is recommended. The price of an annual contract depends on the brand, age, number of stops, usage and whether it includes corrective work and spare parts.
At Karu Elevators® each contract is designed after assessing your equipment and always includes the 24/7 emergency line. We service all brands.
When should an old elevator be modernized?
Modernization makes sense when an elevator is over 15 to 20 years old, breaks down often, spare parts are no longer available or it falls short of current safety standards. Upgrading the controller, machine and doors costs less than full replacement and lowers energy use.
Which elevators are the most energy efficient?
The most efficient elevators are gearless traction units with permanent-magnet motors, variable frequency drives, LED lighting and standby mode. Some also regenerate energy when braking.
What are the advantages of panoramic elevators?
A panoramic glass elevator adds views, natural light and a premium look; it becomes an architectural feature in hotels, malls and homes and feels more spacious to passengers.
How do you request a quote for a freight elevator?
To quote a freight elevator, have ready the maximum load, the size of what will be moved, the number of floors, whether people will ride with the load and the space available for the shaft.
With that information, the Karu Elevators® 4-step quote form or a call to sales is enough to get started.
How do you choose a reliable elevator company?
Choose a company that does a technical visit before quoting, services all brands, keeps spare parts in stock, provides a log of every service and offers a 24/7 emergency line with clear response times.
We answer your questions
Choosing or maintaining an elevator calls for clarity and trust. If you would like to talk your case through with an advisor, message or call us.
What is the difference between a passenger and a freight elevator?
A passenger elevator is designed to move people; a freight elevator moves goods, although some freight elevators can also carry people accompanying the load.
